“You have such an amazing gift for capturing the essence of a person. And even when the individual is serious or angry or upset, there is such a beauty to your work. I just love seeing your photos. And your generosity with sharing your talent - it’s really staggering and we are so so so grateful.” - Jill Hoven, client

For the past decade, roller derby has been at the heart of my life, a passion project that took root and flourished in ways I never expected. It all started with my camera in hand, volunteering as a photographer for roller derby leagues across the Pacific Northwest. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of capturing the raw intensity, camaraderie, and spirit of at least eight leagues at a time—each with its unique pulse and vibrant culture.

But my connection to roller derby didn’t stop behind the lens. I was briefly a player, which gave me firsthand experience of the grit, determination, and athleticism that make this sport so special. And though I never lost my love for skating, my role as a photographer became my way of staying deeply immersed in this incredible community.

In 2018, my journey took on even more meaning when my daughter joined the sport. Watching her lace up her skates as "Pinkerton" (#123) with Southside Revolution Junior Roller Derby reignited my love for every aspect of roller derby. She gave me a fresh reason to stay connected, and my pride as a parent and community member only deepened.

What started as a creative endeavor became so much more—a gateway to paths I didn’t even know existed. Through roller derby, I found a dynamic network of people who are fierce on the track and compassionate off of it. They have become more than teammates or fellow volunteers; they are friends I’m lucky to have in my life.

This decade has been filled with unforgettable moments—snapping photos of triumphant victories, heartbreaking losses, and everything in between. Every click of the shutter has been a tribute to the sport and the people who pour their hearts into it. Roller derby isn’t just a sport—it’s a family, a community that welcomes and uplifts everyone who finds themselves drawn to the track.

Looking back on these ten years, I feel nothing but gratitude. Roller derby has given me endless opportunities to grow, connect, and stay true to my passion. It’s been a wild ride—and I can’t wait to see where the next decade takes me.
